It's 1783, and Ross Poldark has returned home from the American Revolutionary War to find England in the grip of recession and his beloved Cornwall on its knees. His father is dead, his family's land and copper mines are in ruins, and his childhood sweetheart is about to marry his first cousin. Feeling betrayed by everything he loves, Ross must rebuild his life, embarking on a risky business venture, facing new adversaries, and finding love where he least expects it. Based on the novels by Winston Graham and set against the dramatic Cornish coastline, this striking saga stars Aidan Turner (The Hobbit) as Ross Poldark, Eleanor Tomlinson (Death Comes to Pemberley) as the fiery Demelza, and includes a special appearance by Robin Ellis, who played the original Ross Poldark in the 1970s.

I’m usually apprehensive of television series. In my experience, they are usually overdone, highly sexualized, and push too many progressive themes whilst claiming to be true to a previous era. However, I was pleasantly surprised with this presentation. Kudos to a talented cast but more so for the protagonist. Fans of the aesthetically pleasing Aidan Turner will be highly rewarded as he is present in just about every frame. Honestly, Turner as Ross Poldark was absolutely stupendous. In the first few scenes I was curious about him being cast as the hero of the series but those misplaced concerns were quickly put to rest.

In short, Ross Poldark returns from war to find devastation. His girl, (the beautiful Elizabeth played by Heida reed) is now engaged to his cousin, his father died and his land was left savaged. As a true alpha, he takes it on himself to earn his way, while saving the future of others. He marries and eventually falls in love with a fiery red head who compliments him. All great! And romantic!!!

Now, after these exultations of said series, it's sad that I can accurately predict the rest of this series without watching any subsequent seasons. I predict future episodes will make a mockery of this debut. As usual with these things, the hero will commit adultery & push this erroneous idea that humans can not honor their marriage vows and overcome temptation. Beloved characters will be overcome by lust and illicit relationships. More people will die and illegitimate children will be born. ..And it will eventually become like what's already out there

“You don't have to find some mysterious stones to touch to go back in time to the 18th century. Just experience Poldark on a hi-def TV with a good sound system, and you'll BE there. From the stunning Cornwall scenery, to the careful attention to detail in the interior sets and locations, to costumes that range from the ragged to the rich, to the glorious music, and their wonderful choices for casting, especially the brilliant and charismatic Aidan Turner as Ross Poldark, this production has proved to be satisfying for people who have never seen the 70s version or read the novels it is based on, as well as those who have done either or both. “

Has anyone noticed that the "Complete First Season" includes episodes 1-6, but not episodes 7 and 8? Any idea where episodes 7 and 8 can be located?

A different type of series than I normally watch. It was slower to intise me, but soon pulled me into the drama and era. I thoroughly recommend watching it. It transported me into that more challenging time period. Can't even imagine how difficult life was in actuality

The is a bit of outdated material in this script but overall it was great to re-visit this PBS drama.

This is an amazing show! At first, it was a little slow... Didn't really draw me in that much. But I kept going and now I love it! I definitely recommend this show to anyone who's missing Downton Abbey (like me). It's a wonderful show with beautiful scenery with plenty of satisfactory moments. A must-see!

A lot for the ladies and enough for gentlemen to keep interest high. The setting is also beautiful.

What can I say that has not been said already? Many sigh-worthy moments. I adored the interchanges, often unspoken between Agatha Poldark and George Warleggan!

A quality show that went way beyond my expectations. I'm hooked!

At end of part 5:
Ross: You were right. The world is a harder place now thanks to Julia (infant daughter). The stakes are higher. Loss is more painful. Yet I would not change places with him (Dwight, young single doctor). My life is more precious for being less certain and richer for being poorer.
Demela: What does it mean, resurgam?
Ross: I shall rise again.
Demela: Shall we?
Ross: I hope so.
