This was a unique and interesting historical fiction/fantasy. It takes place in 1888 in America that still belongs to Britain. The magisters (those who have magical powers) are the ruling class. Magic is the power source for how things work. The mechanics are are looking for a way out of the magister/British rule. The book is nicely paced, has likeable characters, and good storyline. I look forward to reading the sequels.

The premise of this one is interesting--an alternate 1888 in which the American Revolution failed and the colonies are governed by a ruling class of British magicians--even if the execution is a bit clumsy at times. It's a neat fantasy/steampunk hybrid, and while it's fairly predictable, and characters' relationships seem to progress in leaps and bounds instead of organically, the cast of characters is likable, the world is intriguing, and it's an entertaining enough read to ensure I'll be reading the sequels. Recommended as a readalike for Gail Carriger's Finishing School series, although a bit lighter on the steampunk.
