This is a detailed story of an Air Force surgeon who defied the odds to set a land speed record .... and live to tell the tale. More important is how he promoted the use of seat belts and other safety features we take for granted in cars nowadays, when the car industry was bitterly opposed to the idea and long before anyone heard of Ralph Nader. Another important figure whose story has been resurrected long after most people forgot about him.
