Disfigured by a childhood accident, veterinary surgeon Clara Benning generally prefers the company of animals to people. But when a local man dies following a supposed snakebite, Cara's expertise is needed. She's chilled to learn that the victim's postmortem shows a higher concentration of venom than could ever be found in a single snake--and therefore the killer must be human.

A vet in an English village gets involved in a rash of snake incidents that soon becomes murder and a generation old church fire that no one wants to talk about. Her disfigurement which has caused her to retreat from society soon puts her in jeopardy.
A great story that pulls you in the further into the story you go.

I love Sharon Bolton, but I agree with the reviewer who said she gets better with time.
This is one of her earlier books, and although it was riveting and suspenseful in parts, it could have used more editing.
Kudos to Ms. Bolton for the research she puts into her books; fascinating to read about the habits of snakes.

Clara is a vet in a small English village. She has always been a bit of a recluse because of the facial scarring she has from a childhood accident. The scarring goes deeper than her skin, however. It has affected her entire life. However, she's drawn out of her shell when snakes start showing up in the village, and people start dying. It doesn't help that, as a vet, she is the number one suspect. Can she track down the truth? It has something to do with an event in the village back in 1958 that nobody will talk about. Her search, however, may make her the next victim. Fast-paced and fascinating, this is another winner from the author. However, be aware that the language can be a bit objectionable.

I enjoyed this thriller/mystery from Bolton set in Scotland. All Clara wants is to be left alone, but a recent spate of snakes in homes has her interacting with everyone in the village. Grass snakes, adders, and Papuan Taipans as well as snake-handling religious sects and other mental illness. Fun, compelling read.

This novel had its moments but needs to be edited.
It gets exciting and then goes flat pretty quickly. Not enough Action ...I often found my mind wandering as the main character regales us with trivial details that don't add very much to the story.

With S J Bolton I am travelling backwards and reading the most recent to the first book she published. I have to say she gets better with every book she writes. I love Now you See Me and Blood Harvest, and I'm glad I didn't start with Awakening. Awakening is a huge disappointment. Too much information about snakes and their habitats -- your average reader does not want to be an expert on the taipan, the adder or the cobra. Very little character development -- could not muster up any interest in any of them -- and a really implausible plot. The story is unrealistic and verges on the absurd. I am now afraid of picking up Sacrifice, her first book. Maybe I'll just wait for her to write another book.
