Booooring! Could not watch the entire boondoggle of a movie. Sorry to see our libraries buy this type of a story line.

I would like to thank Kristen Wiig for validating my mental health issues.

An utterly idiotic waste of time that would likely appeal to a very immature crowd or someone with mental health issues they want validated.

It's always hard to blend comedy with drama, and it doesn't always work well here. Kristen Wiig fans are more likely to like this movie.
Contains some mature content.

I don't like Wiig. This movie was boring.

There are some harsh comments about this. I went into it not expecting much and was surprised by both the humor and the darkness. SNL alum Kristen Wiig excels at playing the kind of eccentric characters that Zooey Deschanel and Miranda July make cute and twee. Wiig is able to find the more unstable and unlikable qualities in these characters, which is perhaps what viewers are reacting against. However, I think it's a strength of the film and of Wiig that they don't sentimentalize or cute-ify her character. I liked it better than another film where she plays a damaged character, "The Skeleton Twins." Wiig's ably supported by James Marsden, Joan Cusack, Linda Cardellini, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Wes Bentley. Shira Piven (sister of Jeremy) wrote and directed and her husband, director Adam McCay ("The Big Short"), produced.

I really loved this movie. I thought it was a pretty accurate portrayal of someone living with a mental disorder and how it affects them and the people in their lives. There's no quick answer to the disorder, and it may never be 'cured' only managed. The movie is certainly painful to watch at times, such as Alice being taken advantage of first for her money and second as a kind of freak show for her bizarre behavior, but I think that's the point. I wouldn't say everything works out in the end, but we seem to leave Alice in a better place than when we met her. Wiig is wonderful, as well as the rest of the cast, which includes some big names like Cusack and Leigh. Nice writing and nice music too. I was actually shocked to find so many negative reviews on here! I recommend it! (passes the Bechdel test too btw)

Strangely interesting. It's a comedy but since it is also considered by several medical sources to be a pretty good example of a person driven by a mental illness, it's not so funny anymore. But I'd recommend it for that reason. The other comments here do give a flavour of what you're in store for.

I found this movie to be UNWATCHABLE, unless you are a masochist ! Whether or not it is well acted is irrelevant as it tells the story of someone with unlimited funds doing anything she wishes and the people who enable her for their own purposes.

Alice to her best friend:
I'd like to read from a prepared statement. "Dear Gina, "thank you for being the only girl who would speak to me in the sixth grade. "Thank you for letting me sleep holding on to you during that really bad period in 1989. "Without you, I could never have made it through my 20s, "much less become a millionaire and talk-show host. "You are the kindest, most patient person I know. "I don't deserve a friend as loyal as you, but I sure am lucky to have one. "You could have given up on me seven million times, but you didn't. ...

About Alice:
I really wonder about people. Whether they stop maturing emotionally because of a traumatic event, maybe a birth defect. We may never know what twisted the soul of the daughter of a California dentist, and to the cruel and malicious betrayer she became.

Alice: Everybody wants to be on TV.
Mom: Not everyone is an emotional exhibitionist.
