Much as I’d like to participate in all the “high-mindedness” of those cineastes who approach Pasolini’s “Trilogy of Life” with reverence, all I can say is “hmm”. Seems to me that these elaborate structures are all (well, I’ve only seen “Decameron” and “Arabian Nights”) designed to get beautiful boys (and the occasionally female) fully nude, and sometimes aroused. “Arabian Nights”, at least, is not playing games, and at least verbally (if not visually) alludes to homoerotic sex. The fact that these “actors” are obviously not, and have been chosen for other talents, also gives off more than a faint whiff of exploitation, and belie the director’s seriousness in “storytelling”. Well, fine by me, I’m happy to press the “fast-forward” button, and I did at least enjoy the exotic locales featured here. Yemen! (OMG)! Iran! (Fab)! NEPAL! (Why)? On one of the commentaries on disc one made by a critic (yawn) in appreciation of this opus, it was mentioned that the director disavowed this trilogy, agreeing (in fact) that it was exploitation. He then went on to create “Salo” to portray his disillusion. He saved the most degrading opus of all for last; a portrayal of extreme disgust and self-loathing that the cinema has yet to top. Let’s hope it never does.
