Both an educational and entertaining approach to the subject of constellations. In Ursa Major's case, the author starts with a brief overview of the stars and constellations, the Big Dipper, and galaxies and nebulae. The story of the Great Bear comes from the myth of Callisto and Zeus' love for her. Many Greek historians and astronomers wrote about this constellations, so special attention is placed on historical ties, including how people used it to escape slavery. To be thorough the author mentions variations of the story as well as tales from other cultures. Both photographs and illustrations adorn these pages. Photos include images of the stars, as well as relevant historical objects and places. Additional resources can be found in the back. Between the fun facts, an interesting story, tips on finding the constellation, and a manageable size, each volume in this new series is perfect for a wide range of children. This includes both those that prefer non-fiction and fiction. Each constellation's story gets removed from the larger body of a culture's mythology to shine alone in its individual glory.
