This DVD has both the 1937 version and the 1952 version on alternate sides of the disk. The 1937 version is first rate. I couldn't get through much of the 1952 version, in spite of the lavish Technicolor, because the portrayals of the leading characters seemed flat in comparison to the earlier version.

My rating is for the 1937 version, the finest ever made of Anthony Hope's classic tale. Handsomely mounted production with a perfect cast ... Ronald Colman (in a dual role) is the dashing hero and Madeleine Carroll makes a picture-book heroine. Even the supporting players are first-rate, with a lineup including David Niven, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Mary Astor, and C. Aubrey Smith. Rousing fun!

"Prisoner of Zenda" is a great movie for Ronald Coleman., who at one time was one of Hollywood's biggest stars. Not only handsome he could really act. His sword fights were spectacular. A list of Ronald Colman movies would come up with some of the finest films Hollywood ever produced. For instance, he was in "Lost Horizon", "Beau Geste" and "A Tale of Two Cities". All of these would be wonderful movies to look up if you haven't seen them yet.
