Got halfway through the novel and just skipped to the very end, promising myself that I would learn more about this period of Haiti’s history through other books - any other books.

Skipping to the end, I grumbled and wondered to myself: “Have I even read other works by Greene?” To my complete astonishment I’ve already read three others (The Quiet American, The Power and the Glory, and The Third Man). I have absolutely no recollection of reading any of these but thank goodness I left at least one review: “…what is it about Graham Greene’s writing that leaves me feeling completely, totally, painfully hung-over by the end of the story…?”

And now it all makes sense. This will be the last I’ll be seeing of Greene - seems we mix like oil and water.
