I agree it's good acting, great facial expressing the 'self'. I'd not read all the reviews as one is a real spoiler, totally unnecessary to reveal the twists. If I wanted to know what the film is about I'd read the cover & hope for the best. When you select a foreign film then complain about it I don't understand why anyone would even select it in the first place. You want Hollywood, select Hollywood:( Nice subtitles big enough to read. We gripe about various things in the US and aren't we fortunate.

As others have stated: excellent acting all around by a really interesting director (Petzold) and the compelling Nina Hoss. VERY good and well worth a look. Captivating, poignant, with a good ending that leaves us pondering. The library has several other movies with Nina Hoss that are of similar high-level quality.

This may be the film in which director Christian Petzold broke through internationally. Framed as a East German/West German suspense/romance film, it reveals the great acting ability of Nina Hoss. Americans, lacking in knowledge of Eastern Europe, post WWII, may find some of this film difficult to follow. This is not the fault of the film. It is a fault of the American educational system.

Beautiful low-key movie in which little is said but much is felt by characters (and viewers), and the actors convey their unstated emotions admirably. Hard to watch without a tear or two--even the local Stasi official is allowed a moment of sympathy when we see him struggling to deal with his wife's illness.

Very good story, great acting with real facial expressions. A good ending. Lots of moral messages without schmaltz.

Super duper acting and period detail/atmosphere. The characters in this movie restore my faith in human beings....a great morality tale.

I very much enjoyed watching this film. Most of my family lived in the GDR. This movie does in fact depict what it was like for people who wished for freedom of speech and the ability to travel outside the iron curtain. A well done movie.

This is a pretty solid film from Germany, depicting a woman doctor in East Germany in the 80's, constantly harassed by the Stasi and yearning to flee to the West. However, she still cared very much about her patients, and was influenced by similar dedication from a fellow male doctor. The film is slow and uneventful most of the time - until the ending which is uplifting. In German with subtitles.
