Probably one of Truffaut's best movies. A must see if you like real cinematography. With a strong message, he takes us to a time long time gone and, at the same time, so contemporary.

This art-house piece by Francois Truffaut is probably his best known film. Shot in black-and-white and with a great child cast, this film portrayed a troubled youngster and the social system that mistreated him. The title is misleading after translation from French - it has nothing to do with corporal punishment. A good reference film for serious film fans.

all parents should watch this to see that the don't go down the road of abuse by misunderstanding. and how love is available if one just looks and a second look could make things okay ie. the mother was evil but the boy would've made a good stepson.
