While watching the news, browsing the Internet, or catching up with friends, it can sometimes seem as if everyone around us is being diagnosed with a chronic illness - and that we might soon join them. It's easy to feel as though we have no control over our medical future, but in reality our behavior has tremendous effects on our health, well-being, and even the expression of our genes. In Disease-Proof , renowned expert in disease prevention, lifestyle medicine, and nutrition Dr. David Katz reveals that we can slash our risk of every major chronic disease - heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, dementia, and obesity - by an astonishing 80 percent or more. That's better than any drug or intervention could ever do. But to get there, we need an empowering, comprehensive set of skills.

In Disease-Proof , Dr. Katz shares exactly those skills - the very same ones he applies successfully to himself and his family. Just four simple things - not smoking, eating well, being active, and maintaining a healthy weight - play an enormouse role in our health. The book arms us with what Dr. Katz calls skillpower- a proven, user-friendly set of tools that will help us put this knowledge into action. He compares gaining skillpower with learning how to ride a bike - anyone can learn how to do it with the right help, and then it's yours for life. Drawing upon the latest scientific evidence and decades of clinical experience, Dr. Katz shows us how to make lasting changes, from making smart and surprising food swaps to figuring out what kind of exercise is right for us (and that will actually be enjoyable) to identifying and overcoming our biggest health challenges. Disease-Proof inspires us with a genuine sense of hope that change is possible. With advice on changing our taste buds; cooking at home (including delicious, wholesome recipes); learning better ways to shop (including Dr. Katz's own NuVal system to help choose the best foods) and eat out; finding a fitness program that works for you; and much more, Disease-Proof is a timely, groundbreaking solution to managing weight, improving immune system function, reprogramming our genes, and preventing and reversing life-altering illnesses.

David Katz's basic guidelines for optimum heath will certainly not surprise the health-conscious reader: eat more plants and less processed food, quit smoking and move. To boot, those who frequently read up on nutrition and healthy living may learn nothing from the pages of "Disease Proof." However, what Katz lacks in originality he makes up for in attitude. He exhibits passion for whole foods and exercise but maintains a realistic tone, recognizing that life has room for both indulgences and prudent habits. Trendy cleanses and fad diets do not interest Katz; he would rather give readers the tools to live a vibrant and pleasurable life.

Katz walks his readers through healthy eating habits, exercise tips, and strategies for mental shifts that can release unhealthful weight, cease smoking, and increase physical fitness. He emphasizes "skill power" over "willpower": desire alone will not result in change; we need everyday resources, emotional support, organizational skills and confidence to turn that desire into reality.

While not the flashiest, catchiest, or most sensational book on the market, "Disease Proof" refreshingly opts for evidence-based sensibility. Other writers may demonize ingredients and share wildly alarmist claims but Katz uniquely balances science, strategy and wit to produce an empowering, informative read.
