Originally published in 2004, the 12-issue series SOLO gave some of comics' greatest creators the chance to create stories set in the DC Universe and beyond. Each issue featured one artist, including Tim Sale (BATMAN: THE LONG HALLOWEEN), Paul Pope (BATMAN YEAR ONE HUNDRED), Darwyn Cooke (DC: THE NEW FRONTIER, BEFORE WATCHMEN: MINUTEMEN) and many others. Stories star Batman, Robin, Superman, The Spectre, The Teen Titans and many others, but also include westerns, war stories, science fiction epics, humor and horror, as well as introspective tales from the creators' own lives.

The concept is simple enough: give a number of artists free rein to do what they like in forty eight pages. The result is collected here. This will work or not work depending on your taste in comic book art. For me, the art styles of more artists than less just weren't to my personal liking, and thus affected my overall impression of the book. That said, however, the concept is a good one, with a mix of short stories and genres, some involving established characters, other ones new. The Tim Sale collection that starts things off is the strongest for me, particularly with the Batman-Catwoman encounter and the poignant Supergirl tale.

The best thing DC has put out this century.
