The author has penned a dispassionate, non-polemical exposition of financial natural gas trading, post the Enron debacle. The stage on which the Amaranth drama unfolds is constructively delineated. The character traits of the main actors and their organizations are outlined, and behavioral antecedents presented. No one wore a white hat or a black one. Players at a commodity poker game participate of their own volition. Everyone kept raising the ante; no one was willing to quit the game because it got too rich. Dreyfuss has written a book akin to a manuscript arising from a coroner's inquest into a catastrophe. We are offered insight, not vituperative judgement. What is truly remarkable is that Dreyfuss at the outset had no experience of the financial, or for that matter physical, nat gas trading milieu. Her expertise lies in health care matters. Perhaps this played no small part in producing a work whose (documented) objectivity is of a very high caliber. Excellent investigative reporting indeed. Disclaimer: financial natural gas trading is my sphere of activity.
