Flower, her parents, and her baby brother have escaped their lives as slaves on a plantation in the United States South and are making their way north via the Underground Railroad, hoping to find freedom across the border in Canada. More than 150 years later, Felicia has moved with her mother and grandmother from the big city to a small town. She finds herself one of the few black students at her new school, but she quickly makes friends with a group of girls who introduce her to horseback riding. When she is asked to research her ancestry for a class project, she is torn. Will her new friends want to hear about her family's history as slaves?
