America has enemies. The police, the FBI, the military can't always stop them. That's when they call him...Will Robie is a U.S. government freelance hit man. He works on the dark side. He's an expert at what he does, a professional, the best in the business. Robie is given a target--a man who has been designated as a threat to America, but whose guilt can't be proven in the court of law--and eliminates him with ease. During his getaway, however, Robie encounters another potentially deadly situation--and winds up saving a young teenager. He learns that she is a runaway from a private facility. The location of her parents is unknown. Robie returns her to the police, but he's worried and decides to keep tabs on her. But he also has to be careful because the police are investigating the hit that he performed. A tenacious female investigator in particular is taking a special interest in him, and she believes the two cases are connected. As Robie discovers more of the girl's past, he realizes that there is more here than meets the eye: the girl is at the center of a vast cover-up that may have to do with the disappearance of her parents and stretch to unthinkable levels of power. For the first time, Robie may have to leave the shadows in order to save this girl's life...and perhaps his own, as well.

Another great Baldacci Book. Robie is a very likeable and well defined character. Even though he's an assassin, you can sense his human side. The young girl, Julie, while understandably tough, is rather obnoxious and difficult to take sometimes. Several other characters are also well defined and interesting. The plot keeps you listening with many unforeseen twists and turns, but comes together well in the last couple of chapters.

Listened to this on a road trip and it was riveting. It did seem like a large percentage of the answers to the questions that were piling up came in the last chapters, but the loose ends were dealt with in due time.

Will Robie is someone you respect and root for despite his hired assassin occupation. We see multiple facets of him, but never find out why he does what he does. . . Looking forward to reading more in the Will Robie series and other Baldacci books.

I enjoyed this book and will be reading the other three books in this series. I hope they are as good.

The first in the Will Robie series, very similiar to his other characters ( John Puller, and Oliver Stone ), but Baldacci always seems to come with a number of twists and turns that keeps the reader guessing. Narrators do a fantastic job as well.

We are supposed to meet Will Robe for the first time in this book but it's my fourth book, having read the later ones first. I'd have to say that like a good bottle of wine, Robie improves with age; or maybe I've just read one too many of his books in too short a time. Be that as it may, I felt that BAldacci belabored the point and it was a relief when the book was over. Julie was the only refreshing character in the book. Good book to read on a rainy day when there's nothing better to do.

Thriller about a hit man who knows something about his mission does not seem right and refuses to do the killings and a sniper does the job for him. During this process he meets up with a teenage girl who has had her parents killed and may be involved with all the reasons they want to be killed by other assassins from his past.. An FBI agent gets them the protection they need and wind up being infiltrated themselves. I think divulging of the truth and little hints of the reasons for the killings and identity of the killer took too long; it was a bit tedious. The ending was implausible with characters in impossible situations. So -so

With a name like Robie, the main character, a trained assassin, seems more likable. I enjoyed this thriller, my first Baldacci book, and hope to read other novels by him. He writes simplistically which could be a turn off. The story development and characters reminded me of Lee Child's Jack Reacher novels.
