The author's experience living in the Alaskan wilderness brings a palpable authenticity to this story. Alaska in the 1920s is a difficult place for Jack and Mabel. Drifting apart, the childless couple discover Faina, a young girl living alone in the wilderness. Soon, Jack and Mabel come to love Faina as their own. But when they learn a surprising truth about the girl, their lives change in profound ways.

This was a strange one for me. It is, in many ways, a really lovely story - even with the fantasy element. It is wonderfully descriptive of life in the Alaskan Wilderness just after the turn of the century. You really FEEL the moments of both levity and despair. The character of Faina is very well done. You really never quite know - up until and including the very end - whether she is magical or human or some mix of both. I actually loved the ending - without giving a spoiler here, I love that it truly never answers that question (real or magical).
All that said, it is a very slow style of prose and can be a painfully so at times. There were many times where I found myself feeling like "hurry up and get on with it!!" Yet, I still couldn't quite give up on it and at the end, feel glad to have read it.

The setting for Eowyn Ivey's debut novel, The Snow Child, is 1920's Alaska, but that's of little relevance since the story conveys a certain timeless quality. Even in our present day, parts of Alaska are still untamed and families are still settling there seeking a different kind of living.

Although I was intrigued by Jack and Mabel's plight, which includes their mysterious snow visitor, the story never captivated me like I hoped it would. This is one of those "It's not you, it's me" instances. The Snow Child is a fine read, just not for this reader.
