The premise is great, but I thought the characters were way too thin for me to get invested in them. By the halfway point, I lost interest. To be honest, the whole plot could have been fleshed out so much more.

A GREAT premise, and a reasonably good execution. Too short to really develop as many of the ideas and characters as needed for the scope of the premise. The genuine creepiness is quite fun. The answer to the murder mystery is way too…

🌿🚪📗𝓔𝓿𝓮𝓻𝔂 𝓗𝓮𝓪𝓻𝓽 𝓪 𝓓𝓸𝓸𝓻𝔀𝓪𝔂 📗🚪🌿 Nancy's life was forever altered when she found her home elsewhere. The Hall of Death, where everything was enshrouded in darkness, magnificent banquets, and beautiful dances. Now…

When I got to the point that a character (implied queerness by the author. . . not sure, I didn't finish the book) had been kicked out of fairy land the premise just felt very heavy handed and rather flat-footed. I couldn't finish the…

This was so close to being something I could read to my pre-teens, but I would have to skip a few lines here and there. Its up there with peregine home for pecular children. Light and quick but enjoyable.

I guess I'm in the minority here but I couldn't finish this book. The characters weren't well developed and I really didn't like any of them. There were so many background details crammed into this short story that there was hardly any…

After the kingdom was saved, after the quest was completed, what happened to all the children who make the journey home? For teens like Nancy, a returnee from the Halls of the Dead, it is a nightmare. Rehabilitation is unthinkable to her,…

An absolutely beautifully written story, playing to many of Seanan McGuire's greatest strengths in worldbuilding and characters who will steal your heart. If you ever yearned for a portal to another world as a kid, you will love this book.

I was sucked right into this absolutely beautiful story. I loved the mixture of portal fantasy, coming of age, murder mystery, and intrigue. It was a quick read that was full of so much. The way the characters and setting were described…

This is the story of all those kids who fall through portals into realms like Narnia or Wonderland, and what happens when they're thrust back into our 'real' world. I thought it sounded intriguing. But with the exception of Kade, I found…

A quick murder mystery portal fantasy with a strong premise and enjoyable characters. What's happening to the kids who returned to our basic world after mystical adventures in magical lands? What would they risk to go back?

While not as good as Middlegame, what I consider to be Seanan McGuire's masterpiece and a must-read for anyone who enjoys thoughful, character-driven urban fantasy, Every Heart A Doorway is a very good novella with an amazing premise. It's…

Building upon the rich history of portal fantasy literature, Seanan McGuire creates a world that should resonate with many a young adult; this is a story about identity, dissonance, and community. In this first book of the Wayward…

Prolific author Seanan McGuire answer the question - what happens to all the kids who are in gateway fantasy books and then return back to our world (think Narnia or Alice in Wonderland)? At a special school for those returning teens from…

A great story about finding out, and accepting, oneself as you are. Mostly filled with compelling, complex characters. An extremely enjoyable read, if a bit too short.

This felt like a love letter to the stories I grew up loving, to the stories that I wanted so badly to live in. It was magical and creative and so, so lovely.

Waaaay more YA than I realized. The writing/storytelling feels like it's meant for the 14 and under crowd, but then again there's a lot of death and violence. Character development feels painfully forced. Author feels the need to remind us…

This book is the perfect amount of weird. I love how this story is told, it feels like the kind of story you long for as a child and yet packed with the darkness and brutality that I now crave.
