When Inspector Chopra of the Mumbai police force retires due to health problems, he finds that he cannot remain uninvolved when the police show little interest in looking into the details of a drowned boy. His investigations take him and…

This novel is a blend of "Lassie" and "No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency" although there is a thrilling and active murder plot that emerges from time to time in this police procedural set in contemporary Mumbai (Bombay), India. I enjoyed much…

Is this a cozy mystery? Or just a mystery? One might not think that the setting being the megacity of Mumbai would lend itself to the "cozy" title, but Retired Inspector Ashwin Chopra's clear love for the place shines through, making the…

The writer portrays India from an Indian point of view and shows the diversity, the tensions and issues in the world's oldest multicultural society. Indian people are the main characters rather than exotic sidekicks. Plenty of laughs…

A fairly light hearted mystery with more social subtext than I am sure I understood. I didn't particularly like the Inspector or his wife, though some effort was made to make them so. I did not dislike the characters either. I had hoped…

I am not a huge fan of cozy mysteries, and I'm not entirely sure if this book qualifies, but it is one that felt cozy in the best possible way! I've had a number of people recommend this series for me and, at first, I was hesitant simply…

It took me a while to get into this fully, but I was eventually won over by the recently retired police inspector of great integrity and the baby elephant who becomes his sidekick. Poppy is delightful too. In some ways this reads like the…

A good mystery with delightful characters--even the baby elephant.

Inspector Chopra is investigating the death of a young man, the problem is that he just retired early and shouldn't risk another heart attack. He's also inherited a baby elephant. Great narration, reminds me of the series by Tarquin Hall.

This book was a delightful, multi-layered light mystery set in Delhi, India, and also a nice book on the intricacies of life in Delhi. A recently retired policeman It is definitely entertaining and heartwarming. Chopra had to retire…

Do not let the fact that this is a young adult's book stop you from reading this most enjoyable book. It doesn't really fit with what I have learned from my Sikh friends, but the Inspector is not Sikh. It is like no other cop story I've…

Enjoyable read plus interesting information about elephants and India. Plot and action were not very credible at times but recommend this story for "light" reading.

Style is somewhat patronizing...reminiscent of Alexander McCall Smith and his African stories. Interesting read nonetheless.

When I looked at the page # and found it was 50, I decided I had had enough. I doubt any experienced editor ever looked at it. Too bad, I had hopes while waiting for a sequel in the Vish Puri mysteries, but I am off to a new mystery…

Beautifully written, easily read and composed on multiple threads weaving a complex fabric much like the India Mr Khan obviously loves so. Nothing is spared, nothing romanticized. Do not delay reading this treasure.

"The Unexpected Inheritance of Inspector Chopra" by Vaseem Khan had an unexpected sidekick for the detective; a baby elephant. Inspector Chopra and his elephant discover a diabolical plot in an orphanage of Mumbai. A fun story.
